Top 5 Tips – Survive the early days

  1. Limit visitors. We were strict with visitors due to infection risks. But also its hard work ‘entertaining’ even if it is at a minimum.
  2. Try and figure out a rough routine early on, I mean a ‘wake’, ‘naps’, ‘bed’ times which will help keep things ‘normal’.
  3. Remember, babies are flexible and adaptable, if something isn’t working then change it, it only takes a bit of perseverance to make a change. We changed feeding from 4-8-12 to 10-2-6 after a few weeks of being home as getting up at midnight and 4am was too difficult. I went to bed early (with the babies) and then got up to do 2am and 6am feed then went to bed properly for a few hours. My husband and mum would do 10pm feed then sleep until 6am then take over. I did the majority of night feed and it haunts me even today!
  4. Go outside! Even if it’s into the garden, 10 minutes outside will help clear your mind and keep you sane. It’ll help you ‘zoom out’ of your little bubble and help put things into perspective. In my opinion fresh air is beneficial to the babies in a similar way and promotes sleep in my experience!
  5. Sleep! Whenever, wherever you can!
